Statement from ISIJ on July 20, 2014 Incident
(Thornhill – July 21, 2014) The Islamic Shia Ithna Asheri Jamaat of Toronto (ISIJ) is disturbed by the vandalism that has taken place on its mosque property, the Jaffari Community Centre in Thornhill, ON. The vandalism is being investigated by York Regional Police. It was only a week ago that the ISIJ hosted an Interfaith event which welcomed people from all faiths from across York Region. Having this occur following what was truly one of the most heartening and meaningful experiences is completely unacceptable. While appalling, these actions do not represent the attitudes of Canada’s multicultural society.
The ISIJ has been an active and peaceful part of the Greater Toronto Area for over 40 years and has and continues to contribute positively to the multicultural fabric of our community and Canada as a whole. Volunteers from the ISIJ discovered derogatory slogans on its premises on July 20, 2014, which were immediately reported to York Regional Police. The ISIJ is very appreciative of the quick response from York Regional Police and is awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
